National non-university science and research institutions fulfill an important mission in most of the most developed countries of the EU and the world. SAS, like the academies of other Central European countries, plays a historically important role as the leading research organization of the country. The first mission of the SAS is to carry out frontier top basic research, leading to fundamental new discoveries and ideas. The second mission of the SAS is to make available the scientific infrastructure for the implementation of technically demanding research for all interested parties, whether from universities or other research and development organizations. The third mission is long-term strategic and applied research and development, where the SAS intensively and effectively cooperates with the business sector, the public sector and civil society to transfer existing knowledge into practice.
Environmental Chemistry
EAWAG
Dübendorf, Switzerland
Eawag is the Swiss Federal Institute of Aquatic Science and Technology and is part of the ETH Domain, which includes the two universities of ETH Zurich and ETH Lausanne (EPFL), the four independent research institutions of Empa, PSI, WSL and Eawag. Firmly anchored in its home country of Switzerland, but with a global network, Eawag is concerned with concepts and technologies for dealing sustainably with water bodies and with water as a resource. In collaboration with universities, other research institutions, public bodies, industry and non-governmental organizations, Eawag works to harmonize ecological, economic and social interests in respect of water usage. The Institute thus serves as a bridge between the scientific world and the ‘real world’.
Our research focuses on fundamental questions in biology and on global challenges such as food security, climate change and antimicrobial resistance. Our teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate level enables graduates to embark on successful careers in the life sciences and beyond. As an integral part of the life sciences community at the University of Birmingham, we are working with colleagues in the Colleges of Medical and Dental Sciences (MDS), and Engineering and Physical Sciences (EPS), and we collaborate with industrial partners in the pharmaceutical, agri-food and biotechnology sectors.
Laboratory for Inherited Metabolic Disorders
University Hospital Olomouc
Palacký University
Olomouc, Czech Republic
Our laboratory provides investigation of inherited metabolic disorders and monitoring of treatment of patients with inherited metabolic diseases. Our catchment areas are Moravia and eastern part of Bohemia. In cooperation with the Department of Pediatrics and the Institute of Medical Genetics we provide comprehensive care for patients with inherited metabolic diseases.

Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory
Department of Veterinary Diagnostic and Production Animal Medicine
College of Veterinary Medicine
University of Iowa
Ames, IA, USA
The vision of VDPAM is to support the continual improvement of food animal agriculture and food supply veterinary medicine to benefit Iowa and the world. Our department is made up of highly trained specialists who span a wide range of veterinary disciplines and species interests. We have faculty of all ranks with expertise in diagnostics, medicine, surgery, pathology, microbiology, epidemiology, public health, and production medicine. Most have earned certification from specialty boards. Dozens of additional scientists and laboratory technicians support the research and service components of our department.
Our focus is on natural products – that is what AnalytiCon Discovery is all about. In the course of evolution, natural products have been optimized in various ways and for a wide range of biological effects. Hence, AnalytiCon is taking advantage of an opportunity that is already inherent in these small molecule compounds. The company is the globally preferred partner to companies in pharmaceutical, cosmetic, food and agriculture sectors. As a research and development company, we cover the entire spectrum from establishing substance libraries, identifying active ingredients and synthetically optimizing them to production on a commercial scale.
The keyword in our laboratory is metabolomics. We aim to (i) develop the leading-edge analytical techniques and (ii) educate professionals of analytical chemistry who can work on the global scale.
We are not only just satisfied with being able to use the equipment or reproduce the experimental protocol, but also we are interested in the principles and mechanisms of the analytical systems, that is because we are trying to create a new analytical tool that can open the new research fields.
The West Coast Metabolomics Center is a cluster center with four research laboratories and a large service core. We provide opportunities for research collaborations but also make general metabolomics services available to academic or industry investigators. We advance the state-of-the art in metabolomics research in specific fields of biology but also in technology areas, specifically in computational metabolomics.
The National Research Council of Canada (NRC) is Canada's largest federal research and development organization. The NRC partners with Canadian industry to take research impacts from the lab to the marketplace, where people can experience the benefits. This market-driven focus delivers innovation faster, enhances people's lives and addresses some of the world's most pressing problems. We are responsive, creative and uniquely placed to partner with Canadian industry, to invest in strategic R&D programming that will address critical issues for our future.
